The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians about the circulation of fake postinor 2, which is a widely used emergency contraceptive pill.
This development was made known by the Agency, adding that the Society of Family Health (SFH), the company authorized to market the drug, had initially alerted NAFDAC and stated that it did not import the counterfeit batch.
NAFDAC stated that the differences are noticeable errors such as as “Distnibuted in Nigeria” instead of “Distributed in Nigeria” as well as the pin verification sticker has a smaller font size and wrongly spells “Veify” instead of “Verify’.
The Agency gave further details as follows: Counterfeit Type 1: Batch No. T36184B, manufactured August 2024, expiring August 2028. Counterfeit Type 2: Batch No. 332, manufactured March 2023, expiring February 2027.
According to NAFDAC, the detail of the original postinor-2 is Batch No. T32458H, manufactured February 2023, with an expiry date of February 2027.
The Agency noted, “Counterfeit medicines are unregulated, untested, and illegal, making their safety and efficacy impossible to guarantee. Patients should only obtain Postinor-2 from verified pharmacies or licensed healthcare providers.”
