In a pioneering advancement, Columbia’s fertility specialists announced the first successful pregnancy using the STAR (Sperm Tracking and Recovery) system, an AI-based procedure designed to identify and isolate viable sperm in cases of azoospermia, a condition marked by the absence of detectable sperm in a man’s ejaculate.
Understanding Azoospermia
Azoospermia is a major cause of male infertility, responsible for about 10% of cases. It can be classified into two types: Obstructive azoospermia, caused by blockages in the reproductive tract (due to infections, surgeries, or congenital abnormalities).
Non-obstructive azoospermia, stemming from sperm production issues in the testicles (due to genetic disorders, hormonal imbalances, or infections). Although azoospermia makes natural conception challenging, assisted reproductive technologies offer alternative pathways to parenthood.
How AI Overcomes the Challenge
Traditional methods often miss the extremely rare sperm cells in azoospermic samples. Columbia’s STAR system combines advanced imaging with AI algorithms to analyze up to 8 million images per hour, searching for even the rarest viable sperm.
Once detected, a microfluidic chip gently isolates the sperm without the need for centrifugation, which can damage delicate sperm cells. This ensures the preservation of healthy sperm for use in fertilization, providing a non-invasive and chemical-free alternative to existing techniques.
