Veteran politician, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has voiced firm belief that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands as the clear front-runner for the 2027 presidential election. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, Yakasai described Tinubu as the most influential figure in Nigerian politics today, attributing his strong position to widespread support and a divided opposition. “Right now, I don’t see anyone with the structure, reach, or capacity to seriously challenge Tinubu,” Yakasai stated.
Yakasai pointed to the president’s advantage of incumbency, loyalty from ministers and governors, and even backing from elements within the opposition as major strengths.
“Tinubu has solid control of the political system. Most governors, his ministers, and even some opposition leaders are with him. That kind of influence can’t be ignored,” he added.
He also dismissed reports suggesting that northern political bodies have endorsed a presidential candidate for 2027, describing such claims as personal opinions without institutional backing.
“To my knowledge, neither the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) nor the Northern Elders Forum has formally endorsed any candidate. The North as a region hasn’t made a collective decision,” he clarified.
The elder noted that internal divisions within opposition parties are further boosting Tinubu’s re-election prospects.
When asked to assess the Tinubu administration’s performance, Yakasai declined to give an opinion but emphasized the need for politicians to shift their focus from personal ambition to national development.
“Our leaders must start putting the country first,” he said.
“We’ve been divided for too long along ethnic and religious lines. It’s time to promote ideas and programs that unite and move Nigeria forward.”
Reflecting on his own life, Yakasai who will turn 100 in December attributed his longevity to divine grace and family genetics, revealing that both of his parents lived long lives.
“I’m blessed with over 80 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It’s all by the grace of God,” he said with a smile.
