Following their impressive display at the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament, the Super Eagles football team was rewarded with the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a ceremony which was held on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja. All team members and officials were in attendance for the ceremony and were each given a flat and one plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Super Eagles played against Ivory Coast, Angola, South Africa and Cameroon to secure their spot in the final game of the competition.
The AFCON final match was played on Sunday, February 11, 2024 but Nigeria came in second place and lost the match and trophy to Ivory Coast, the host of the competition.
The winners of this year’s competition, Ivory Coast, pocketed $7 million while second place, Nigeria walked away with a sum of $4 million.
Nigeria is a three-time winner of AFCON while Ivory Coast clenched their third AFCON title in the just concluded competition.
