Few days after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Italian FA has sacked the national team coach Gian Piero Ventura. The decision came after an emergency meeting by officials of Italian FA (FIGC) on Wednesday. The FA is also calling for the resignation of President Carlo Tavecchio.
According to Marca, "while the much-maligned 74-year-old is set to hold onto his job, the coach has been sacked after 18 months in the dugout, in which time he led the Azzurri to second in their group before failing to reach the tournament in Russia".
The report explained that Ventura was always likely to be the man sacrificed by the FIGC given that Italy had reached every World Cup since 1958 and many were in agreement that his policy of not selecting younger players was reason enough for him to go.
Meanwhile, Coach Carlo Ancelotti is believed to have been penciled to take over from Ventura.
