Nigeria’s Amaju Pinnick has emerged as one of the Vice Presidents of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), at the ongoing 43rd Ordinary General Assembly taking place in Rabat, Morocco after a landslide victory. Pinnick defeated Malawian FA president Walter Nyamilandu by 43 votes to eight during the CAF General Assembly held on Friday. The Nigeria Football boss is now the fifth Vice President in the new arrangement by the continent’s football governing body who hitherto had only three vice presidents. After Friday’s poll, the trio of Augustine Senghor (Senegal), Ahmed Yahaya, (Mauritania), Souleiman Waberi (Morocco) who all stepped down for Patrice Motsepe to emerge as President were returned as Vice Presidents in that order.
Pinnick becomes the third Nigerian elected into the prestigious council after Oyo Orok Oyo (1980-1988) and Amos Adamu (2006-2010).
Before this latest return, Pinnick was CAF First Vice President between September 2018 and July 2019 under former CAF president, Ahmad Ahmad.
However, a sour relationship with Mr. Ahmad saw Pinnick lose out on his seat in 2019.
Meanwhile, Pinnick is also one of the aspirants for the FIFA Executive Committee post. The field for this race has been narrowed from six to four for the Anglophone candidates in quest of Africa’s places in the FIFA Council.
