Manchester United has announced that Cristiano Ronaldo is set to leave the club by mutual agreement with immediate effect. The English football club made this announcement in a statement published on its official website and social media pages on Tuesday.
According to the statement, “The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.
“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch”.
Ronaldo said, “Following talks with Manchester United, we’ve mutually agreed to end our contract. I love Manchester United and I love the fans that will never change. It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future”.
The Portuguese’s departure from the club follows his controversial TV interview with Piers Morgan where Ronaldo criticized the club, adding that he had no respect for the club’s current manager, Erik ten Hag.
The 37-year-old also accused the club’s hierarchy of trying to force him out of Manchester United.
It is not yet known which football club the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will play for but he is currently with the Portugal team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Tournament being held in Qatar.
