Google has unveiled Gemini Code Assist, a free AI-driven coding tool designed to improve development resources for Nigerian programmers. Built on Google’s Gemini 2.0 model, the tool supports all publicly available programming languages and is optimized for coding tasks. This initiative aims to assist independent developers, students, and startups who often struggle to access advanced coding tools. “By providing these resources irrespective of financial constraints, we empower the next generation of developers with essential digital skills for future innovation,” Google stated.
A DORA study found that over 75% of developers now use AI in their daily tasks. Google also revealed that more than 25% of its new code is AI-generated and reviewed by its engineering teams. Unlike other free coding assistants that cap users at 2,000 code completions per month, Gemini Code Assist offers up to 180,000 completions, a limit few developers reach.
Additionally, the assistant integrates AI-powered code reviews via GitHub for public and private repositories, helping streamline the often time-consuming review process.
The free version is available on popular integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, Firebase, and Android Studio. Developers can use it to generate code snippets, debug, and modify applications without switching between windows.
Google emphasized that the expansion of Gemini Code Assist aligns with the growing global developer population and aims to support the future of software development.
