South African radical opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to a five-year jail term for firing an assault rifle at a rally eight years ago. Some die-hard supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters, EFF, party leader were seen gathered outside the court for the sentencing in the politically charged case atmosphere.
According to the presiding judge, magistrate Twanet Olivier, the opposition leaders had deliberately violated firearm laws by shooting a gun in the air in the crowd during an EFF celebration in 2018.
The outspoken opposition leader, Malema, born March 3, 1981, is a South African politician, founder, and leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, or EFF.
Many consider him a communist and nationalist.
