Former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, is expected to be officially approved by the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections after he became the only contender. The party revealed today, May 29, 2026, will be the day of its nationwide primaries, where the decision will be made. According to Moses Cleopas, National Chairman of the NDC, candidates for governorships, the National Assembly, and state Houses of Assemblies from all 36 states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, will be produced by the exercise.
He clarified that logistical issues related to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays, including transportation limitations and restricted aircraft availability affecting party officials and candidates, had delayed preliminary operations.
Cleopas emphasized that participation in the internal party process is not allowed for any security agency or external institution, such as the police, DSS, or INEC officials. He cautioned that only the national leadership is permitted to reveal results, adding that all state results will be combined centrally and released by the National Working Committee.
The party promised that the nationwide primaries would go ahead as planned and urged members and candidates to maintain calm and order during the process.
