Atiku Abubakar has received the African Democratic Congress (ADC) flag as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The party's flag was handed over to the former vice president by the party’s national chairman, David Mark, on Wednesday evening, after the nationwide collation of the ADC’s primary election results.
David Mark said, “I will like to hand over our flag to our flag bearer and the man who will take us to the villa.
“The journey ahead might not be easy, but with Nigerians on our side, we will win. Nigerians are watching to see if we can put them first. Let tonight mark a rebirth of political trust. Let’s embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.”
According to the party, Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes to beat his closest rival, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, who polled 504,117 votes, followed by Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who obtained 177,120 votes.
Atiku said, “We demonstrated that while democracy is being strangled and squashed by its ruling party and its operatives, democracy is alive and well in the African Democratic Congress.”
Atiku lauded the process; however, Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen faulted the process and rejected the results.
Amaechi stated on X, “Following reports of widespread voter disenfranchisement in most parts of the country during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Primaries yesterday, I unequivocally reject the concocted results being announced.”
Hayatu-Deen, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said, “I will not be attending the announcement of the ADC presidential election results today. I am concerned by reports from across the country of widespread vote rigging, some of which I myself observed, and will therefore be taking advice on my next steps.”
