OpenAI has expanded the capabilities of its AI coding assistant, Codex, with the launch of a new Chrome extension that allows the tool to work directly inside the Google Chrome browser on both macOS and Windows systems. The update marks another major step in OpenAI’s push to turn Codex from a coding-focused assistant into a broader workplace automation tool capable of interacting with websites, apps and online workflows in real time.
According to announcements shared online, the extension enables Codex to operate across Chrome tabs in the background without interrupting a user’s browsing activity. The system can reportedly assist with tasks such as debugging browser-based applications, checking analytics dashboards, conducting online research and updating customer relationship management platforms.
The rollout comes weeks after OpenAI introduced a sweeping upgrade to Codex, adding features such as computer control, memory, image generation and web access. The company said the platform can now “see,” click and type using its own cursor to complete tasks across desktop applications.
Industry analysts view the Chrome integration as part of intensifying competition in the AI coding assistant market, particularly between OpenAI and rival Anthropic, whose Claude Code platform has gained traction among enterprise developers.
OpenAI has increasingly positioned Codex as more than a software development tool. Recent updates introduced support for long-running automated tasks, workflow memory, plugin integrations and collaboration with multiple AI agents simultaneously.
The company said Codex is now being used by millions of developers globally, with adoption accelerating among enterprise customers. Reuters recently reported that OpenAI had expanded partnerships with major consulting firms including Accenture, Infosys and PwC to support wider deployment of Codex across large organisations.
The Chrome extension is currently available in most regions, although support for users in the European Union and the United Kingdom is expected later.
While the new integration could boost productivity for developers and digital workers, some users online have also raised concerns over browser permissions and security, noting that the extension may gain access to browsing sessions and signed-in accounts.
