Arsenal secured a dramatic 1–0 away victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Kai Havertz after a decisive impact from substitutes. For much of the match at Estádio José Alvalade, Arsenal struggled to break down Sporting’s defensive block and looked likely to settle for a stalemate. However, the late introduction of Gabriel Martinelli and Havertz transformed the game. In stoppage time, Martinelli delivered a precise cross that Havertz converted from close range, giving Arsenal a crucial advantage heading into the second leg.
Manager Mikel Arteta praised the contribution of his substitutes and the significance of the result. After the match, he said:
"Very happy to win away from home in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against a team that have not lost at home for I don't know how long. I think the last time was probably in Europe as well, that shows the difficulty of it. In the end a magic moment from the finishers win us the game. Beautiful and that's the impact you need when you get to this stage of the season. Everybody has to make an impact and they certainty did that tonight."
Despite the victory, Arteta acknowledged Arsenal’s attacking struggles and their difficulty breaking down Sporting’s compact defence. He noted that a disallowed goal and several near chances highlighted the need for sharper execution in the final third.
"Yes, because when we got into the final third and we sat there we missed the final bit. We had to be a little bit crisper, faster, more efficient to break them down when they had that block. We had a goal disallowed and there were two or three occasions where we were close but we lacked that final pass."
While the substitutes provided the decisive moment, Arsenal also relied heavily on goalkeeper David Raya. Raya produced several outstanding saves, including an early fingertip stop that kept the visitors in the match.
Arteta highlighted the goalkeeper’s importance to the result, saying:
"He had two moments where he made two big saves. And that's the Champions League, the Champions League is always decided in the boxes and because there's so much quality here. At the moment he's phenomenal and extraordinary since he joined us. We are very lucky to have him."
With the narrow away win, Arsenal take a valuable lead into the second leg, where they will aim to secure progression to the semi-finals.
