Google is preparing to launch a powerful new anti-theft feature in Android 16, aiming to make stolen smartphones inoperable. Unlike the current security system, which still allows limited use of stolen phones, such as making calls the upcoming update will enforce stricter protections. According to a report by Android Police, the new security measures will block all device functionalities if a factory reset is performed without the owner's authorization. This initiative is part of Google's broader strategy to combat the growing issue of smartphone theft globally. By rendering stolen devices useless, the tech giant hopes to remove the incentive for theft altogether. The feature is expected to roll out later this year with Android 16.
Google unveiled the upcoming enhancement during The Android Show: I/O Edition. The update significantly upgrades Factory Reset Protection (FRP), a feature that already aims to deter theft by locking out unauthorized users. Android 15 brought improvements to FRP, and Android 16 will reinforce it even further.
While Google has not officially confirmed the full details, Android Police shared a screenshot suggesting the direction of the upgrade. It shows a warning screen that appears during a factory reset, which Android 16 will reportedly display if someone tries to bypass the setup process. The phone will remain unusable until the original lock screen credentials or Google account details are entered.
This approach represents a much stricter application of FRP than currently available, where a stolen phone might still function partially.
However, it's worth noting that these enhanced FRP features may not be included in the initial Android 16 release expected in June but may instead arrive in a subsequent update later this year.
Meanwhile, CNET reports that Android 16 will spotlight Google’s Material 3 design, offering dynamic colors, smooth animations, and a more fluid user interface. The update will also introduce new customization options and features, while expanding Gemini AI support to more devices, including smartwatches, cars, and TVs.
