The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to embark on a visit to two countries, including South Africa and Angola, today (Wednesday) for the G20 and AU summits.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement Tuesday evening, saying, “President Tinubu’s first stop is Johannesburg, where he will attend the 20th summit of the G20 Leaders. After the summit, he will proceed to Angola for the AU-EU summit”.
The G20 summit is scheduled for November 22–23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, after which the AU–EU meeting will take place in Luanda from November 24 to 25.
At the invitation of South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also chairing the 2025 G20, Tinubu will participate alongside other leaders under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability” — marking the first G20 summit to be held on African soil.
The summit will address issues such as inclusive and sustainable growth, debt and development financing, disaster-risk reduction, climate action and fair energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work, and the role of artificial intelligence.
President Tinubu will also engage in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G20 to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and to discuss regional peace, security, and development, the Presidency further revealed.
The African Union, now a full G20 member alongside the EU, is expected to take part in the Johannesburg meeting.
After the G20 summit in Johannesburg, Tinubu will proceed to Luanda for the AU–EU summit, which gathers Heads of State and Government, along with innovators and civil society, to focus on climate issues, inclusive development, infrastructure, the digital economy, the creative industry, manufacturing, and agribusiness.
He will be accompanied by top officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and the Economy, Solid Minerals, and Trade and Investment, as well as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.
According to Onanuga, the President is expected to return to Nigeria after both meetings.
This G20 summit marks Tinubu’s third visit to South Africa since taking office, but it will be his first official trip to Luanda, Angola, as President.
