Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), has reiterated Nigeria's commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Ghana Revenue Authority's (GRA) Customs Division to combat illicit trade and promote seamless cross-border commerce under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Adeniyi announced this on Monday, November 3, 2025, during a high-level meeting with Ghana Customs Commissioner-General, Brigadier-General Glover Annan, at the GRA headquarters in Accra. Both agencies stressed the importance of stronger intelligence sharing, standardized border procedures, and collaborative enforcement operations in dismantling smuggling networks and enhancing legitimate trade between the two countries.
Brigadier-General Annan welcomed the Nigerian team and hailed the meeting as a "reaffirmation of Ghana's deep historical and economic ties with Nigeria."
He praised the NCS for leading the Customs-Partnership for African Cooperation in Trade (C-PACT) program, which was established with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and is supported by the World Customs Organisation (WCO). Annan stated that the upcoming C-PACT Conference, set for November 17-19, 2025, in Abuja, would be an important platform for African Customs administrations to promote transparency, lawful trade, and sustainable development.
Adeniyi's remarks focused on the growing menace of transnational crime networks that exploit legal and operational weaknesses between African Customs administrations.
He recalled that Nigeria and Ghana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on customs cooperation in 2001 and urged an immediate revision to reflect new trade realities under the AfCFTA.
Adeniyi noted that his visit was also intended to ensure Ghana's support for the upcoming C-PACT Conference and to strengthen collaborative efforts to enhance intra-African commerce.
The Nigeria-Ghana Customs partnership represents a renewed effort for a coordinated regional framework based on intelligence-led enforcement, border modernization, and economic integration in West Africa.
