Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has formally launched the "Flow with Confidence" menstrual hygiene campaign, which aims to improve period health among schoolgirls nationwide. The debut and distribution event was held on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, and was attended by Mrs. Priscilla Chidimma Otti, the state coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and the wife of the governor of Abia State.
Mrs. Otti, who spoke at the event, emphasized that the program's goal is to empower schoolgirls, especially those in rural areas, by educating them about menstrual hygiene, boosting their self-esteem, and maintaining their dignity. “It is unacceptable that our girls still face significant challenges during their menstrual cycle, often leading to absenteeism from school,” she said.
Mrs. Otti emphasized that the Flow with Confidence program, which is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative, benefits girls throughout the federation and is not limited to Abia State. The program would provide 370,000 schoolgirls in rural areas with a year's worth of high-quality disposable sanitary pads. Ten thousand packs are allotted to each state as part of this.
“We choose disposable sanitary pads because it offers a safer hygiene option for women’s reproductive well-being," she explained.
Speaking directly to the pupils, the Abia First Lady urged them to work hard, help one another, and not allow stigma or shame to undermine their self-esteem. An important step in bolstering cooperative efforts to safeguard the health, education, and dignity of Nigerian girls was taken with the event.
