Peter Akpe has been confirmed by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly as the state's new deputy governor. Akpe's appointment was ratified by the assembly during Tuesday morning's plenary session. Following the gap left by the passing of previous deputy governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025, Governor Douye Diri nominated Akpe, who, until his confirmation, served as Chief of Staff at Government House, Yenagoa.
Originating from the same region as the late Ewhrudjakpo, the Sagbama Local Government Area in the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Mr. Akpe offers a wealth of public service experience.
Akpe, a seasoned politician and public administrator, served two terms in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly before that. Before taking on prominent political positions as Deputy Chief of Staff and Acting Chief of Staff, he advanced through the civil service to the rank of Director. He is a Christian clergyman with a PhD who is frequently referred to as Pastor Peter Akpe or Hon. (Dr).
