In the wee hour of this morning, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck the Marmaris area of southwestern Turkey, killing one teenager and injuring dozens of people. The statement was released through the office of the interior minister. According to the country’s AFAD disaster agency office, the incident struck at 2:17 am (2317 GMT on Monday) some 10 kilometres (six miles) off the coast of Marmaris, which was felt as far as in Greece and Egypt which both are some hundreds of miles away.
The Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya who shared the incident on his official X page said, a 14-year-old girl died following a panic from the quake as well as some 70 people also sustained some degrees of injuries in the Mugla province as they rushed for safety, including “some who jumped from a height”.
Although, the Minister added that there were no initial reports of buildings destroyed in residential areas.
Yerlikaya said “In Fethiye, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Gunlu was taken to the hospital due to a panic attack, but, unfortunately, despite all interventions, she passed away”.
Fethiyeh lies abount 100 kilometres away to the east of Marmaris.
14 amongst those whom sustained injuries were treated at the scene of the event according to the report, while, eight others were briefly treated, then discharged, and another 46 were being treated in hospital, he said.
The earthquake was also “broadly felt” in Greece’s Dodecanese islands, the national quake protection authority chief Efthymios Lekkas told the enikos.gr news portal, saying some tourists in Rhodes had been forced to evacuate their hotels.
But there were no reports of injuries, he said.
It was also felt in Egypt, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.
