Former Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos State, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Tunji Disu has been appointed by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba to replace the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), DCP Abba Kyari who is being investigated by the police following an indictment by the FBI. Mr Kyari was on Sunday 1st of August 2021 suspended by the Police Service Commission on the recommendation of the inspector general following his indictment by the FBI in a fraud case involving Hushpuppi.
The police said Mr Kyari’s suspension was to allow an independent investigation into the charges against him. Although, Mr Kyari has denied any wrongdoing.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, in a statement he issued on Monday in Abuja, that while DCP Abba Kyari is under suspension, Tunji Disu will assume the role as head of IRT with immediate effect.
“The Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba has today, 2nd August 2021 approved the posting of DCP Tunji Disu as the new Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT). The posting of the officer is on the heels of Management’s decision to fill the leadership gap within the IRT and refocus the Unit for better service delivery.
“The IGP has charged the new Head of the IRT to demonstrate his professional competence in his leadership of the Unit,” - Frank Mba.
Preceding his appointment as the new head of IRT, Disu served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations at the Force Headquarters.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the Lagos State University (LASU) and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.
