There was apprehension in Onitsha commercial city of Anambra State, on Sunday after a lorry, Mercedes 911 model fell and spilled its content of cartons of live ammunition on the road along Awka Road area of the town. The discovery of the truck attracted heavy security presence who besieged the area and Shoprite axis of the city to scare away perceived invaders and maintain calm. A source at the scene who sought anonymity revealed that some boys around the area scooped some of the ammunition and ran away before security operatives arrived at the scene. It was gathered that the conductor of the said truck fled the scene after the incident, although another source revealed that the driver was arrested by the police.
The source said the security operatives including police and soldiers brought a tipper and used payloader to pack the bullets into the tipper.
“The tipper had to make three trips to carry all the bullets to an unknown destination before the truck was finally towed out of the ditch,” the source revealed.
The State Police Relations Officer, DSP Ikenganya Tochukwu, when contacted said he is not aware of the incident, but promised to make available useful information about the incident as soon as it is confirmed.
Recall that there has been increasing spate of kidnaps and attacks particularly in the South-East and South-South region of the country. A particular reference is those of incessant attacks on Police operatives and destruction of police stations and outposts by unknown gunmen. The most recent among them being that of the killing of two policemen and razing down of the police station at Mkpatak, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state on May 9, 2021.
It was revealed that they also killed 12 cows in a coordinated attack that took place around 5 pm on same Sunday.
