Gunmen in the early hours of 19th March 2022 have razed the home of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof George Obiozor, at Awo-Omanma in the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State. The attack on Obiozor's was reported to have happened the same night the Umuguma Divisional Police Headquarters in the Owerri West LGA of the state was burnt with two police constabularies killed and cars set in flames.
The Nigerian Peace Keeping (Support & Participation) Bill, 2018 which seeks to restrict the powers of the President regarding peacekeeping missions has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives. The Bill will ensure that it is mandatory for the National Assembly to approve peacekeeping missions in other countries and appropriate funds for its execution. The Bill was sponsored by Hon. Olowole Oke and titled ‘A Bill for an Act to Provide for Statutory Regulations of Peace Keeping Operations by Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Other Security Organizations; and for Related Matters.’
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has issued warning letters to two judges over their misconduct in the discharge of their judicial functions. One of the affected judges, Justice Muawiyah Baba Idris of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja was issued a warning letter and also placed on the NJC’s watch list for one year. Justice Idris was indicted for signing the Writ of Possession for execution on the same day he delivered judgment in a suit between Sicons Nigeria Ltd. versus Nile Place Restaurant and Catering Services Ltd.
The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has instructed the immediate implementation of the new salary structure for the force. The IGP also gave approval for distributions of uniforms and other accoutrements for his personnel.
This according to report is as a result of rumour making the rounds that a section of the police force was planning to strike over the non-implementation of the new police salary structure, poor general welfare of officers, and failure to provide sophisticated weapons for fighting crime in the country.
The sixth batch of Nigerian evacuees from Ukraine have on Saturday arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. A total of 301 Nigerians, including students trapped in Sumy, Ukraine, were evacuated from Budapest, Hungary to Abuja via Azman Air, flight AZM2351. According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the evacuees were provided with free sim cards loaded with airtime to contact family members, courtesy of a partnership between NiDCOM and telecom company, MTN.
The Nigerian Navy on Friday deployed 2 helicopters and 10 warships in a joint multinational maritime exercise which comprised the navies of 31 other countries.
