The Kaduna State High Court sitting in Kaduna has today Wednesday, set free the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife. During the eight hour ruling, Justice Gideon Kurada upheld the no-case submission filed by Zakzaky and his wife. The Kaduna State Government had in the last five years levelled a case of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace against the Shiite leader. Justice Gideon in his ruling held that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendant.

Another set of abducted Bethel Baptist college students, Damishi have been released days after two other students of the school were rescued by the police. The students were said to be found inside the Tsoho Gaya Forest in Chikun Local Government Area of the state in the early hours of Sunday. As of the time of reporting, it is unclear whether the bandits released them for ransom or they were rescued by security operatives or escaped by themselves.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola on Friday asked governors to sign the death warrants of convicts on death row who have exhausted all avenues of appeal to free up space in the nation’s correctional facilities. Speaking at the inauguration of the Osun State Command headquarters complex of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Oshogbo on Friday, the minister stressed the need to bring cases involving the inmates to a close. According to him, the nation’s correctional facilities are being stretched by “an overpopulation capacity of 18 percent” with facilities built to serve 57,278 inmates currently holding 68,747 inmates. Aregbesola said to remedy the decongestion, convicts on death row who have used up all means of appeal must be hastened to the gallows. “There are presently 3,008 condemned criminals waiting for their date with the executioners in our meager custodial facilities. This consists of 2,952 males and 56 females,” the minister said.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Thursday said the first batch of A-29 Super Tucano fighter aircraft procured from the US has arrived at Kano. Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information confirmed the arrival of the fighter aircraft in a statement in Abuja. Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has pardoned 136 inmates as part of measures to decongest the correctional centres in the state. On granting the pardon, Ganduje stated that some of the inmates either have ill-health or they have stayed longer than necessary. He then went on to task the inmates to be people of sound character when they are finally reintegrated into society. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Abba Anwar, who made this disclosure via a statement on Wednesday stated that the governor took the decision when he visited Goron-dutse Medium Correctional Centre on Tuesday.
