The Police Council on Friday, June 4, confirmed the appointment of Alkali Usman Baba as the substantive Inspector General of Police almost two months after President Muhammadu Buhari approved his appointment as acting IGP. Usman Alkali was confirmed during a meeting of the council in Abuja, which was presided by President Muhammadu Buhari. Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, who confirmed the development to State House correspondents after the meeting said the appointment of Baba as IGP was unanimously confirmed. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo physically attended the meeting which was billed to take place last week but postponed to honour the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, and ten other military officers who died in a plane crash on May 21.

Gunmen have murdered retired Inspector General of Police Christopher Dega, Senior Special Assistant on Security to Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom. The incident occurred on Monday night in the Bukuru area in Jos South LGA, of Plateau State, where the victim was shot dead by the assailants. The Plateau state Police commissioner Edward Ebuka, told Channels Television that preliminary investigation revealed that the retired Assistant Inspector General who left Makurdi was trailed to Jos where he was shot dead. According to the police boss, some suspects have been arrested in connection to the crime and investigations are ongoing.

President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a sturdy charge to Security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the over 100 children kidnapped from an Islamic school in Niger state. The president condemned the latest incident as "unfortunate" while directing the agencies to secure their "immediate release", Presidential spokesperson Mallam Garba Shehu said on Twitter on Tuesday. In a statement title, ‘Expedite action towards release of school children, said President Buhari received a briefing on the latest incident of school kidnapping and condemned it.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sacking of top management staff of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) over alleged N3.4bn fraud. The affected staff includes the NSITF Managing Director (MD), Bayo Some fun, 3 Executive Directors (EDs), Jasper Azuatalam; Tijani Sulaiman, and Mrs. Olukemi Nelson. 9 top management officers were also dismissed.
