The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, in his New Year Message, has reassured Nigerians that the power sector would focus on the progress achieved in the previous year to deliver more sustainable and improved service delivery in 2026.
He explained that the difficulties they faced in 2025 did not prevent the industry from making some notable progress, especially in stabilizing the national grid and achieving what he described as historic milestones in power generation and distribution.
Adelabu credited the progress made in enhancing the national grid and reducing the incidence of grid collapses to the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), widely referred to as the Siemens Deal, adding that the current phase one of the initiative is expected to boost grid stability and significantly reduce power outages.
He commended Nigerians for their patience and resilience over the past year, as the power sector struggled with difficulties arising from grid instability and inconsistent electricity supply.
The Minister reaffirmed the federal government’s resolve to provide dependable, affordable, and sustainable power supply to households, industries, and overall economic development.
Adelabu further highlighted the main priorities of the year, which include intensifying efforts to stabilize the grid, expanding transmission networks, enhancing cooperation with distribution companies to enhance service delivery, and fast-tracking metering projects in communities.
He added that the ‘Light up Nigeria’ program would continue as a flagship program, maintaining a strong focus on industrial zones and agricultural centers to drive economic growth and provide job opportunities.
He disclosed the government’s dedication to developing renewable energy, solar, and hydropower, to expand electricity access in rural and underserved areas.
The Minister emphasized that reaching these objectives would demand a collaborative effort, urging state governments, local communities, the private sector, and citizens to work together.
“Protecting power infrastructure and adopting energy-efficient practices are vital contributions every Nigerian can make. As we step into the New Year, let us do so with shared responsibility and renewed optimism. The work continues, and our resolve is stronger than ever,” he stated.
