British boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, authorities have confirmed. Gbenga Omotosho, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, said the crash occurred around the Shagamu Interchange axis of the expressway. He added that the state government immediately deployed an ambulance to the scene.
Photographs circulating from the accident site show a shirtless Joshua emerging from the wreckage without visible serious injuries, standing amid debris and surrounded by sympathisers.
However, eyewitnesses quoted by Punch reported that the accident claimed the lives of two people, while Joshua reportedly sustained only minor injuries.
According to the report, the crash occurred when a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN collided with a stationary truck on the highway.
The incident comes just nine days after the former heavyweight champion knocked out social media personality Jake Paul in an exhibition bout held at the Kaseya Center in Miami. The fight was tagged “Judgment Day.”
Joshua has been spending his yuletide holiday in Nigeria since the bout.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babasey, had not responded to calls seeking official confirmation or further details on the incident.
