The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Nigerian Army have reported significant progress in their ongoing operations against armed terrorists across Kaduna, Borno, and Yobe states, including the elimination of eight terrorists and the rescue of 40 kidnapped individuals.
In a statement released on Sunday, NAF High Command confirmed that airstrikes conducted as part of Operation WHIRL PUNCH (OPWP) successfully destroyed a terrorist logistics base located in Yadi Forest, Giwa Local Government Area.
According to Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, the operation was executed based on credible intelligence indicating a substantial presence of terrorists and a cache of weapons in the Yadi Forest area.
“Intelligence reports revealed that the logistics base was linked to notorious terrorist kingpin Kadade Gurgu, a known associate of Dogo Gide,” Ali stated. “Furthermore, Gurgu has been providing shelter to other terrorist leaders fleeing increased military pressure in Sokoto and Zamfara States.”
The NAF dispatched an aircraft supported by an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform to carry out the airstrike. Initial reconnaissance suggested the area was uninhabited; however, as the aircraft approached, several terrorists were observed attempting to flee.
The airstrike resulted in successful hits on the logistics facility, which was subsequently engulfed in flames, sending thick black smoke into the sky. Independent sources, including local informants, later confirmed the total destruction of the base and reported numerous terrorist casualties.
The NAF assured the public that it, along with surface forces, will continue to assert dominance in the region through enhanced situational awareness, regular patrols, and targeted strikes on bandit strongholds. “Our mission is to eradicate terrorism and criminal activities throughout the Northwest and North Central regions,” Ali emphasized.
In related developments, the Nigerian Army highlighted the apprehension of a notorious arms courier, who was found in possession of a large cache of ammunition during a stop-and-search operation along the Lafia-Keffi Road in Nasarawa State on September 28. The operation led to the recovery of 303 live rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Troops also intercepted a logistics convoy in Gubio, seizing three vehicles with food supplies and cash. In Kukawa, they rescued 38 hostages after terrorists fled. The Chief of Army Staff commended the troops for their bravery and acknowledged the crucial support from citizens in providing intelligence. The Army remains committed to combating terrorism and ensuring public safety.
