The 18th edition of the Okpekpe road competition has been cancelled. The cancellation was not unconnected from the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the globe and the travel restrictions across the world.
The organizers of the Okpekpe international 10km road race the first label road running event in West Africa called for the cancellation six weeks before the supposed event scheduled for 23rd May 2020 in Auchi, Etsako East local government area of Edo state.
The promoter of the race Mike Itemuagbor revealed the cancellation was a difficult decision to take since it's no longer safe nor responsible to continue with the preparations of the silver label road race in West Africa hence it was called off.
Itemuagbor added that the organizers of the race are working with relevant authorities in Nigeria, especially the Edo state government to ensure a safe environment for visitors and Nigerians who will visit the state for sports and other reasons.
