Transport operators are being gradually moved to the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal as part of the Abia State Government's recently implemented centralized transportation system in Umuahia. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, revealed this on Tuesday while providing reporters with an update on the results of the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti, at Government House in Umuahia. Kanu stated that before enforcing the law, the government held a number of discussions with transportation stakeholders, addressing operator concerns to ensure a smooth transition. He claims that despite some opposition, unions and informal transport providers have already started operations at the station. He clarified that all of the state's transport parks will be moved to the terminal and said that the Commissioner for Transport and his staff have been in constant communication with operators to allay their worries.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Commissioner for Transport, stated that the initiative's goal was to create a more organized and effective transportation system rather than deprive anyone of their means of subsistence. He disclosed that four representatives from each of the transportation unions and operators were requested to work at the terminal, where they would be appropriately identified and included in the new system.
According to Ukaegbu, regardless of union membership, the terminal uses an open loading procedure based on a first-come, first-served basis. Between 80 and 90 percent of operators had already welcomed the idea, he continued, and talks with those who had not yet complied were still in progress.
The commissioner also emphasized the amenities offered at the port, such as passenger waiting areas and an air-conditioned drivers' lodge.
Speaking as well, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Governor's Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, stated that the centralization approach will minimize operating costs for carriers, increase security, eliminate indiscriminate loading stations, and lessen traffic congestion. He further stated that the program would prevent extortion and other irregularities in the transportation industry while establishing a more structured system that is advantageous to both operators and commuters.
