President Bola Tinubu has authorized the hiring of 50 physicians and 100 nurses for the nation's correctional facilities, according to Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior. When Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, made a courtesy visit to Tunji-Ojo in Abuja on Tuesday, he revealed this. The minister stated that the lack of medical staff in certain prisons prompted the president's permission.
He said that there was no doctor available to treat the prisoners at the River Correctional Center's hospital. 11/1:01 He claims that some penal facilities, like Kuje, have equipment capable of doing major surgery.
“The President understands that he is the President of all Nigerians, including those inmates. And as father to all, he has always shown that he cares,” he said.
According to the minister, the Federal Government has been using train-the-trainer programs to train prisoners.
“We have been able to build capacity through what we call 'train the trainer.' We did what we call inmate skills audits. We went to our correctional centers and tried to learn the skills these inmates had. “We now empower you to be able to train other people. We empower those who graduate. “We have been able to sanitise. And the president has done too well by increasing their feeding allowance by 50 per cent,” he said.
In order to highlight and inform Nigerians of the accomplishments of the Ministry of Interior, the minister emphasized the significance of the Ministry of Information and National Reorientation.
