The Committee of Chiefs of Defense Staff of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has set off an important meeting today, August 2, 2023, at Defense Headquarters (DHQ), Abuja, following a seven (7) day ultimatum issued to the Military junta in Niger to reinstate the democratic leadership or risk military action.
Recall that ECOWAS had on Sunday, July 30, 2023 during an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government chaired by Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Military junta in Niger to revert back to the status quo or risk consequences including a possible military action.
The Committee meeting focus on the political situation in Niger Republic and the decision of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government at their Extraordinary Session held on the 30th of July 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria.
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa (Gen.) chaired the gathering of other Chiefs of Defence Staff from fifteen (15) ECOWAS countries that include; Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Cote D’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, and Senegal.
The Committee will deliberate on the political crisis and work towards a resolution within the 7-day ultimatum issued by the ECOWAS leadership.
