New Zealand-based Nigerian mixed martial arts fighter, Israel Adesanya has defended his UFC Middleweight title Champion after defeating Robert Whittaker in Sunday's rematch. Whittaker had a chance close but Adesanya won with a unanimous decision of 48-47, 48-47, 49-46, employing his height and powerful kicks, countering Whittaker's punches. “I knew he was gonna bring everything because last time I took everything away from him,” Adesanya said.
“And he had nothing to lose. Like I said, I’m the champ. If you want it, come get it.”
Adesanya made his intention known to return in June against middleweight contender, Jared Cannonier who defeated Derek Brunson in Houston.
"I know June doesn't have a pay-per-view yet, but like I said, I'm the new dog in the yard, I'm the big dog in the yard now. And I know the other dog, Jared Cannonier, did some work tonight."
Whittaker expressed his disappointment, saying “I know I started off rocky in the first round, but I feel like I took every round after that,” Whittaker said.
“I’m happy that I fought my heart out and I left it here. I thought I did enough (to win).”
