Minister of Sports, John Owan Enoh, has today called on the Nigerian team, Super Eagle, to target the golden trophy of the tournament as they prepare to face the group A, comprising of Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bisau. Although the minister noted that grassroots sport development is the way to go, saying he will revive the Headmaster’s sport competition across primary schools to boost the sport enthusiast amongst children.
The Minister stated this today while speaking to newsmen at the state house, Abuja shortly after meeting with president Tinubu, calling on all Nigerian to rally round the super Eagle so that they could be propelled to victory.
Enoh noted that the Nigerian team has not won the AFCON cup for quite some time now, and therefore optimistic that it is Nigerian time now, saying “which means they must prepare very well.”
He announced that President Tinubu has given the go ahead with the approved of a national campaign tagged “Let’s Do It Again” to mobilize resources for the Super Eagles for a successful tournament.
According to him, “By the time they know that the whole country is behind them, they will have added firepower. The country’s expectation is that they will win the cup and bring it back to Nigeria. That’s the idea of the campaign. It will be a morale booster.”
He explained that idea behind the ‘Let Do it Again’ is to mobilize resources from the private sector for the support of the national team such that government funds would not be needed to execute the tournament.
Besides, he added that the ‘let’s do it again campaign ‘will be a morale booster for the Super Eagles to know that
the whole country is behind them.”
Grassroots sports development according the minister is aimed at bringing sports activities close to the youths in rural areas where they will be exposed to sports facilities to help improve on their talents.
