Manchester City’s Phil Foden has been honored with the 2023-24 PFA Player of the Year award, while Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has been named the Young Player of the Year. This marks the first time since the 2009-10 season that both men's awards have gone to English players, with Wayne Rooney and James Milner winning in that campaign.
Foden, 24, delivered an outstanding performance throughout the 2023/24 season, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions. His contributions were pivotal in Manchester City's successful defense of their Premier League title, securing a fourth consecutive championship. Foden’s impressive form also included helping City to win the FIFA Club World Cup and reaching the FA Cup final, where they were defeated by Manchester United.
“I am both proud and grateful to receive this award,” Foden said. “To be recognized by my peers means everything to me. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me, as well as Pep Guardiola, my coaches, and my teammates who have supported me throughout the season. I’m also thrilled to see my teammates Kyle Walker, Rodri, and Erling Haaland recognized in the PFA Team of the Year. Our focus now is on continuing our success this season.”
In addition to the PFA Player of the Year award, Foden also won the Premier League Player of the Season and the Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year awards. This season, becoming the youngest player to win six Premier League titles.
Likewise, Cole Palmer, 22, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 emerged as the PFA Young Player of the Year after a breakout season with Chelsea. His 27 goals and 15 assists during his debut season at Stamford Bridge helped Chelsea secure a spot in European competitions and a sixth-place finish in the Premier League while finishing the season as the second-highest scorer behind Haaland. Palmer also scored in England’s Euro 2024 final, where the team was narrowly defeated by Spain.
In the women’s categories, Khadija “Bunny” Shaw of Manchester City won the PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year award. Shaw had a remarkable season, scoring 21 goals and helping Manchester City finish second in the Women's Super League, just behind Chelsea on goal difference. Shaw also claimed the WSL Player of the Season and FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year awards earlier in the year.
Grace Clinton, on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from Manchester United, was named the Women’s Young Player of the Year. Clinton excelled in midfield, contributing four goals and four assists during her loan spell.
