FIFA released its current world rankings on Monday, showing a significant improvement for Nigeria as the Super Eagles climbed to 26th place on FIFA’s official website, up from their previous 38th position.
The Eagles’ 12-place climb and the recorded additional 79.09 points’ boost followed Nigeria’s standout performance at the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The Super Eagles clinched the bronze medal after a faceoff with the Pharaohs of Egypt last Saturday, losing only one out of seven matches they featured in, and demonstrated coordination and teamwork during the matches.
Meanwhile, the following countries were ranked the world's top 10 by FIFA: Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, and Germany.
The top 10 countries in Africa are Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tunisia, Congo DR, and Mali.
The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles for their resilience and the remarkable outing at the AFCON tournament.
“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high. Learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger,” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement.
