Amidst mixed criticism and controversies trailing the recently introduced Video Refereeing Assistant (VAR) in International Football, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino has reiterated his support for the technology, stressing that there is no going back.
Infantino who made the remark while reacting to widespread criticism of VAR maintained that "VAR represents the future of modern football. I am extremely happy with VAR so far. We have seen how video assistance has helped referees to make the correct decisions. This is what VAR is all about."
He added that "the VAR tests during this Confederations Cup are also helping us to improve the processes and fine-tune communication. What fans have been waiting for over so many years is finally happening. This is a milestone tournament. Video Assistant Refereeing is the future of modern football.”
VAR came under heavy criticism when the goal of Ricardo Quaresma of Portugal against Mexico at the ongoing Russia Confederation Cup was disallowed after the Centre referee had recognized it as a goal.
Apart from this incident, VAR had also controversially disallowed Eduardo Vargas goal against Cameroon while allowing Australia’s Tomi Juric's goal even when there was initially call for handball.
