Chile beat Cameroon 2-0 thanks to goals from Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal and Chilean forward Eduardo Vargas. Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez came off the bench to cross for Vidal's 81st-minute header, while Vargas finished Sanchez initial move in injury time where he rounded the keeper but failed to beat a defender on the line.
Chile’s Eduardo Vargas was certainly in disbelief that his first half effort was cancelled when he fired past the Cameroun goalie, Fabrice Ondoa after receiving a pass from Arturo Vidal - but Vargas had a strike correctly ruled out for a very marginal offside following the use of video technology.
However, his goal in the 91st minute was also referred to the video assistant referees - presumably to check on another possible offside - but the goal stood after the review. Cameroon Coach, Hugo Broos, believes his team would bounce back to reckoning despite the African champions slipping to a 2-0 defeat to Chile at the Confederations Cup on Sunday.
He stated in an interview:”We have a young team and it needs to mature.”We were also playing against a team ranked fourth in the world, 28 places above us, so there is a difference in quality and experience as well.”I think we did fine.
“We lacked a bit of awareness on Chile’s goals but we will go step by step and improve gradually. The match was overshadowed to an extent by the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system that caused confusion on two occasions – firstly when Chile had a goal controversially ruled out for a marginal offside call and secondly when Vargas’ goal was given after initially being ruled out.
The Indomitable Lions will lock horns with Australia on Thursday at Saint Petersburg Stadium.
