President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the safe return of the Super Eagles of Nigeria following their harrowing ordeal in Libya. The team was stranded at a remote airport for over 13 hours during their trip for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
In a statement released on Monday, President Tinubu expressed his deep concern over the inhumane treatment endured by the players and officials. He commended the team for maintaining their spirits despite the challenging circumstances.
"The Nigerian leader recognizes football's unifying power and views the treatment of our citizens as unsportsmanlike and inhumane," the statement read. "He calls on all football lovers and administrators to work together to prevent such incidents in the future."
The Super Eagles' flight was initially scheduled to land in Benghazi but was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abraq International Airport. Upon arrival, the team faced significant delays and lacked basic amenities like food, water, and transportation.
In response, the Super Eagles decided to boycott the AFCON qualifier, with the Nigeria Football Federation supporting their decision. The team's return to Nigeria sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability from the Libyan authorities.
President Tinubu has called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action against those responsible for the mistreatment of the Super Eagles. He also commended the Nigerian government's efforts to ensure the team's safe return.
