Nigeria will play their first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against South Africa, on 10th June, 2017, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said.
Both Nigeria and South Africa failed to reach the 2017 Cup of Nations tournament, which took place in Gabon. Nigeria missed out on AFCON 2017 to Egypt after taking one point from the two leg tie played in Kaduna and Cairo, respectively. Meanwhile, South Africa lost out to eventual winners, Cameroun.
It would be recalled that, the same venue hosted the two teams, as they fought to qualify for the 2015 edition of the tournament. The match finished 2-2 and also ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of defending their trophy in Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr’s men are scheduled to camp in France in May before the South Africa clash.
South Africa coach, Stuart Baxter is not relaxing as the newly appointed Bafana Bafana tactician is making frantic effort to study Nigeria’s Super Eagles players very well ahead of the game.
Baxter previously coached Bafana from May 2004 to November 2005, winning 10 of 23 matches before being fired after South Africa missed out on the 2006 World Cup.
