Super Eagles ace, Emmanuel Dennis has claimed his Premier League club Watford “threatened” him over his participation at the 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), holding in Cameroon. This was disclosed by Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen. Eguavoen stated that Dennis informed him that his club threatened him not to feature at the AFCON.

“The club said they won’t allow Dennis to go (to the AFCON),” Eguavoen reported.

“Dennis also told me that his club is doing everything humanly possible for him not to be at the AFCON.

“Dennis said he wants to come, but his club is threatening him.

“We have to play with what we have.”

Meanwhile, Coach Eguavoen has today dropped Dennis from his AFCON squad after Watford hung on to a technicality on the player’s invitation.

He is the leading scorer for Watford with eight goals and five assists as the club battle to stay up in the Premier League on their return from the English Championship.

The Eagles have now been forced to review their final 28-man by replacing four players in one swoop.

Henry Onyekuru comes in for injured Victor Osimhen, and Peter Olayinka takes the place of Dennis. Also, Tyronne Ebuehi replaces injured Shehu Abdullahi while Semi Ajayo has replaced another injured defender, Leon Balogun.
