The Federal Government has ordered an immediate investigation into the data processing activities of Temu, an e-commerce platform owned by a Chinese company, over issues related to potential violations of the National Data Protection Act. The probe was directed by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) National Commissioner/CEO, stating that it was pertinent after online surveillance was executed via personal data processing, accountability, data minimization requirements, transparency, duty of care, and cross-border data transfer.
Olatunji noted that Temu processes personal information of approximately 12.7 million data subjects in Nigeria, with 70 million daily active users globally.
The National Commissioner warned that processors who engage in processing activities on behalf of data controllers without verifying their compliance with the NDP Act may be liable under the NDP Act.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing data protection regulations and ensuring that organizations operating in Nigeria adhere strictly to lawful and transparent data processing standards.
