Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, on Sunday conceded defeat in the presidential election, to his opponent John Mahama.
Bawumia who confirmed to have called Mahama wrote on his ‘X’ handle, “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility”.
Mahama, the former President of the country (2012-2017) and also in the just concluded country’s presidential election has also confirmed he had received Bawumia’s congratulatory call.
The vice president said Mahama won the presidency decisively, as well as the opposition National Democratic Congress party winning the country’s parliament election.
The defeat in Saturday’s election marked the end of two terms in power for the NPP under President Nana Akufo-Addo, characterized by Ghana’s worst economic crisis in years, high inflation, and debt default.
Ghana’s economic troubles were the central issue in the election, following a crisis of default and currency devaluation that resulted in a $3 billion International Monetary Fund bailout.
