Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the department of ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, has been released by her abductors. She was abducted alongside her husband and nephew on December 27, 2023 at the senior staff quarters of the eye centre.

Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, was on Wednesday, docked before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Kuje for allegedly assaulting a bolt driver at his Abuja residence. The lawmaker, who is representing Aba North and South federal constituency of Abia State, pleaded not guilty to a First Information Report that the Nigerian Police Force entered against him before the court. The charge against the defendant bordered on abuse of office, assault, and threat to life.

The member representing Aba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alex Mascort Ikwecheigh who was caught on a viral video assaulting e-hailing cab driver has apologised to Nigerians and leadership of the House for his action, which he claimed started as a misunderstanding. The lawmaker also said that he has explored alternative dispute resolution methods with Stephen Abuwatseya aimed at addressing the issue. He hinted they have reached a respectful resolution, adding that he was committed to following through

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, stated that three Chinese nationals and two Nigerians have been arrested for illegal mining in Nasarawa state. This was disclosed by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media; Segun Tomori on Monday in Abuja, said the suspects were arrested at Rafin-Gabas, Agwada, located in Kokona Local Government Area. The Minister bemoaned the company involvement in such operation since 2021, adding that it has resulted to revenue losses to the federal government. The ministry’s mining marshals set up to safeguard mining sites across the country, carried out the arrests based on credible intelligence.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command on Monday said it has arrested a lawmaker for assaulting a driver in the nation’s capital. Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the Abuja Command, confirmed that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh has been arrested. She said Ikwechegh is “at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning”. The Police spokesperson explained in the statement that the cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, reported the matter to the Command.

The Enugu Police Command has dismissed Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was implicated in the murder of Ogene cultural musician, Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, popularly known as Igbo Jah. Inspector Ozonwanji was also arraigned in the Enugu Chief Magistrate Court, which remanded him in the Enugu correctional facility, after the conclusion of hisorderly room trial. According to Enugu police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, the inspector’s maximum penalty of dismissal followed by court prosecution, was in line with the Police Act and Regulations 2020.
