On his 87th birthday on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu honored former Defense Minister Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), calling him "a distinguished statesman, soldier, and gentleman" who served Nigeria "with undivided loyalty" in both times of peace and war. Danjuma's life is inextricably linked to Nigeria's post-independence narrative, according to a goodwill letter that Tinubu personally signed. He noted that the former army leader "stood firm when unity was fragile, and the path ahead was uncertain."
This moment invites contemplation of a tremendous life of service and the several seasons he has bravely and resolutely navigated. "The story of our nation is intertwined with that of General Danjuma. He worked for Nigeria during a difficult period for our fledgling country.
"His record of service remains a reference point for discipline and honor, and his sense of duty helped steady the country," Tinubu stated. The President went on to say that after leaving office, the elder statesman has continued to influence public discourse by providing "wise counsel and personal example."
He always speaks with clear, confident clarity and a steadfast faith in Nigeria when discussing national concerns. Tinubu said, "Many leaders, including myself, have found strength in General Danjuma's willingness to provide guidance whenever the moment required a steady voice."
Additionally, he commended the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation's charitable endeavors, stating that they had "opened doors for countless families in need of support and dignity and grown into one of the most respected philanthropic institutions on the continent."
Regarding Danjuma, Tinubu stated, "At eighty-seven, he stands as an elder whose life has helped shape the direction of our nation." He has bravely served and lived a purposeful life. The President asked God to give the Taraba-born people peace, health, and strength.
"I give thanks to Almighty God for the grace that has sustained General Danjuma throughout the years as he celebrates his birthday. "May He continue to grant him health, courage, and tranquility." I hope the years ahead bring him more fulfillment and the peaceful knowledge that his life has impacted many people in Nigeria.
Danjuma was an important member of the Nigerian Army both during and after the civil war. He served as Chief of Army Staff from 1975 to 1979 and as Defense Minister from 1999 to 2003. As a businessman and investor, he established the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation in 2009 to fund national initiatives for economic empowerment, health, and education.
