The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) the official government body for student loans, has on Friday announced that the application portal for the student loan is now open.
The loan website became active in the early hours of Friday, however, the first phase of the loan is open to students of federal tertiary institutions, the first phase. NELFUND spokesman Nasir Ayitogo listed the step-by-step application for the loan.

Inconsistencies in the recent appointment of governing boards of tertiary institutions have prompted President Bola Tinubu to order a total and comprehensive review of the process before the inauguration and retreat being planned for the nominees. In a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, he recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education recently released names of nominees for chairmen, Pro-Chancellors, and members of the boards and councils of universities, Polytechnics, and colleges of education. It also announced that the inauguration and retreat for the nominees will take place on 31 May.

Nigerian students at Teesside University in the United Kingdom have been told to quit the school and return to Nigeria over unpaid fees. According to BBC, Teesside University said the move was in line with the UK’s immigration regulations. “Teesside University is proud to be a global institution with a diverse student population but is also very aware of its visa issuance and compliance obligations. “These strict external regulations ensure that the university fully supports a robust immigration system and are outside of the university’s control,” BBC said, quoting a university spokesperson.

Managing Director of Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, has revealed that only students across federal tertiary institutions will be prioritise to have access to the 1.2 million students loan in the first phase of its disbursement. The NELFUND chairman was speaking at the opening of the portal for applications on Friday, saying the first phase will be officially open for students across the federal tertiary institutions whose institutions have completed the uploading of their data. 

The federal government has constituted the governing councils of federal universities in the country.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to go on a nationwide strike due to their dissatisfaction with the government's handling of their demands. Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, president of the union, stated that the decision was made after a meeting of its national executive council, as there has been no meaningful effort by the government to address their demands in the last ten years.
