The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to block all pornographic sites that are being access in the country henceforth. The lawmakers directed the Commission to comply with immediate effect and prevail on all internet service providers to block all such contents to safeguard the youth moral in the mist of decadence.
The motion was sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress, APC, lawmaker from Katsina State and was backed by others.
Moving the lead motion, which was unanimously agreed by his colleagues, Tafoki argued that cyber pornography was becoming a global problem, adding that Nigeria had not taken adequate steps to address it.
According to him, Nigeria is a “highly religious country” where all the practicing faiths preach against nudity and obscenity which is threatening the moral up-bringing of the next generation.
The lawmaker throw his weight behind other Asian, Africa and the Middle East countries whom have taken similar step of banning pornography to safeguard its morals.
The Katsina lawmaker as a reference quoted some known psychologists and sociologists about the negative impact of pornography and the damages it is doing to the young generation.
He explained that pornography could lead to adultery, prostitution and addiction which is one of the bend in our present day society.
Tafoki said, “Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content”.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, subjected the motion to a voice vote where the lawmakers unanimously voted in support of the motion.
Consequently, the House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive
