The Police Command in Anambra has confirmed that the deaths toll of Saturday’s stampede at the scene of palliatives distribution in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area has now been confirmed to be 22persons. Accordingly, the palliative distribution was organised by a philanthropist in the area who wanted to ease the food hardship problem to his people in this yuletide season.
Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, gave the update on the development through a statement today in Onitsha, saying that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, after he visited the hospital where the victims of the tragic stampede are receiving treatment.
He said that the police boss has sympathised with the families and friends of the deceased, while wishing those injured quick recovery.
Meanwhile, investigation into the unfortunate incident that led to the stampede has commenced, adding that the command remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerian people during and after the festive period.
