President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Nigerian military to investigate the recent killing of six soldiers by terrorists in Borno State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that on January 4, gunmen attacked Sabon Gida in Damboa Local Government Area, resulting in the death of six soldiers and the destruction of some military hardware. However, troops managed to neutralize many of the terrorists during the encounter. In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed condolences to the military and the families of the fallen soldiers, emphasizing that their service “will forever be honored and remembered.” “I extend heartfelt gratitude and sympathy to our military and security forces on behalf of a grateful nation,” Tinubu said.
“Your sacrifices and dedication are deeply appreciated, and we stand firmly with you in the ongoing fight against these threats.” The president called for a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack, aiming to prevent future occurrences.
Additionally, Tinubu praised the armed forces for their prompt and decisive response, particularly the air component, which launched effective retaliatory strikes. While six soldiers lost their lives in the attack, swift military reinforcement led to the elimination of 34 terrorists, with others fleeing the scene, according to defense spokesperson Edward Buba.
“This resolute action by the army demonstrates our military’s capability and readiness to confront and defeat threats to national security,” Tinubu said. “Their actions underscore our commitment to eradicating terrorism and banditry, paving the way for peace and security for all Nigerians.”
The president urged Nigerians and the media to support the military in its counterterrorism efforts, encouraging the military to proactively target the camps of bandits and terrorists, particularly in the North-West, where these criminals continue to threaten the lives and homes of innocent villagers.
Similarly, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack on the Sabongari community in Damboa Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, Zulum described the attack as a desperate attempt to destabilize the state’s progress and offered condolences to the Armed Forces and the families of the deceased soldiers.
“On behalf of the government and people of Borno, I extend our deepest condolences to the armed forces and the families of the fallen and wounded soldiers. May Allah grant them eternal rest and provide comfort to their loved ones,” Zulum said.
He commended the troops in Damboa for their bravery, noting that despite the attack, they successfully defended their position and prevented further damage. Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the military to ensure sustainable peace and development in the state.
He also praised the resilience of the affected community’s residents and urged them to continue supporting the military’s efforts to secure the region. The governor lauded the military’s professionalism and assured them of the government’s steadfast support in the fight against insurgency.
