Following the recent tragic attack on the Kawel community in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu sent Assistant Inspector-General of Police Dankombo Morris, who is in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, to Plateau State on Tuesday.
At least twenty peasants had been killed in the raid.
The deployment is a component of the quick steps taken to evaluate the security situation on the ground and put plans in place to restore order and put an end to further attacks.
To strengthen security in the impacted communities, the IGP also authorized the deployment of additional police officers and operational resources, including tactical teams and Police Mobile Force units.
In order to coordinate the reaction, AIG Morris and members of the state police command management team visited Bokkos on Tuesday and held strategic talks with local government representatives, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders.
Alabo Alfred, the state police command spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday following the visit.
The statement said, "The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan-Disu, has dispatched the AIG of Police in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, AIG Dankombo F. Morris, to Plateau State for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and to put in place necessary measures aimed at restoring peace and preventing any further occurrence following the unfortunate incident in Kawel Community in Mushere District, Bokkos LGA of Plateau State."
Today, the AIG visited the Bokkos Local Government Area with members of the Plateau State Police Command's Management Team. There, he spoke with the local government's leadership, the area's traditional head, and other important stakeholders.
Amalau Samuel Amalau, the chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, greeted the Assistant Inspector General of Police and his group during the meeting.
"He thanked the Inspector General of Police for his prompt action and response following the incident.
Amalau noted that the attack was unprovoked and characterized it as a terrible and regrettable act of sheer criminality.
He told the delegation that the victims had been buried the day before.
According to the release, "He, however, appealed for the deployment of additional security assets and manpower to Bokkos Local Government Area to complement the ongoing efforts of the police and other security agencies in securing lives and property in the general area."
Following the incident, Mrs. Hajara Yunana, President of the Women in Politics Initiative, Plateau State chapter, discussed the issues and difficulties that women in Bokkos LGA were facing.
She expressed gratitude for the police leadership's efforts and guarantees, but she insisted that the promises made should be followed through on.
She also urged the Inspector General of Police to tighten security around the impacted villages and other susceptible sites within the LGA by utilizing contemporary policing tools.
The release cited Yunana as stating, "She urged the women of Bokkos to remain resilient, calm, and confident in the capacity of the police and other security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice."
Morris expressed the Inspector General of Police's sincere condolences to the Governor of Plateau State and the citizens of Bokkos LGA, especially those who live in the Kawel community in Mushere District, about the regrettable occurrence.
He said that in order to bolster security presence, rebuild trust, safeguard vulnerable areas, and stop such incidents, the IGP has sent more troops and operational assets—including units of PMF/tactical team personnel—to the affected area.
The AIG urged locals, youth organizations, and community leaders to maintain composure, aid law enforcement, and to keep providing accurate, timely, and helpful information to support continuous efforts to uphold peace and prosecute those responsible.
