Five months after Nigeria confirmed its index case in Lagos state, the country has yesterday crossed the 1000 persons on its death record. The index death was first recorded on March 22, 2020. According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as of August 23, 2020, five additional persons were confirmed to have died of the coronavirus complications pushing the death toll to 1,002.
Since the death index case, the fatality number has increased steadily, but more deaths have been recorded between June and August.
As of April, 23rd, the health agency had confirmed 33 fatalities; by May 23rd, it jumped to 221 persons; a month later, it crosses to 533 victims, later on, July 23rd, the country had recorded 833 cases of deaths.
Lagos being the Epicentre of the disease has continued to record the highest figure with 202 fatalities, followed by Edo state with 100 person’s record, followed by Rivers state with 57 cases, Kogi state has the lowest toll with only two persons.
Currently, the total number of confirmed cases exceeded 52,000 as of Sunday, August 23rd, 2020 with 322 new confirmed cases from 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Though the figure represents a significant drop over the past 24hrs, meanwhile, 601 positive cases were confirmed on Saturday.
As usual, Lagos took the highest chunk of the confirmed cases as there was a marked difference in the daily count for the past 24hrs as the state dropped from 404 new infections on Saturday to 130 cases on Sunday.
However, the daily recovery count dropped to its lowest in close to two weeks with 178 persons discharged on Sunday, the last time the numbers of discharged persons dropped to below 200 was on August 10 when 160 persons were confirmed to have recovered from the deadly virus.
As of yesterday, the toll stood at 52,227 confirmed cases out of which38,945 discharged and 12, 280 are still active cases with 1,002 fatalities.
